MTU Tuning: Eliminating Packet Latency

Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) determines the largest size of a data packet your network can handle. If it's too high, your packets get "fragmented" and slow down.

The VPN Overhead

VPNs add a small amount of data to every packet for encryption (headers). This means you need to lower your MTU slightly to account for this "tax."

Finding the Balance

We use automated path discovery to set your MTU. For example, on a standard fiber connection, we might drop the MTU to 1420 bytes to ensure perfectly smooth delivery without fragmentation. This "tuning" can often result in a 20% speed increase.
